The whole school staff, governors and parents work closely together to ensure the welfare of the children, although the class teacher is immediately responsible for each child in his or her care. The playground areas are supervised by teachers before and after school and at break time, and by mid-day supervisors at lunchtime.
If children are unwell in school, their parents are notified. The school should be given telephone numbers where parents can be contacted and an emergency contact of someone who can look after the child if parents cannot be contacted.
With parental permission children receive routine dental check ups from the Area Health Authority.
The school has a Health and Safety Committee made up of Governors, the Headteacher, teaching and support staff. The Committee monitors the health and safety aspects of the school on behalf of the Governing Body.
Stringent health and safety regulations govern the use of materials and the care of the building. Regular fire and emergency procedures are carried out and all staff and children are made fully aware of what is expected of them.
    Children are expected to:

    • exercise personal responsibility for the safety of self and class mates
    • observe standards of dress consistent with safety and/or hygiene (this includes unsuitable footwear, knives, ear-rings, body jewellery and other dangerous items)
    • use and not wilfully misuse, neglect or interfere with, things provided for his/her safety.

School gates and the front entrance are kept secure from the inside to limit unauthorised entrance to the school site.
William de Yaxley Junior School is committed to promoting the health and welfare of all pupils. We are required by law to follow procedures laid down by the Cambridgeshire Area Child Protection Committee if we see signs which suggest that one of our pupils may have been a victim of abuse. Use of the procedures in this way is an obligation placed on the school by legislation and in no way implies that any parent/carer is being accused of wrong doing.

    Welfare and Child Protection
The whole school staff, governors and parents work closely together to ensure the welfare of the children, although the class teacher is immediately responsible for each child in his or her care. The playground areas are supervised by teachers and teaching assistants before and after school and at break time, and by mid-day supervisors at lunchtime.
The school is well supported by such professionals as the School Nurse, the School Doctor, the Education Welfare Officer and other members of the Support Services. They are able to advise both school staff and parents.
In the event of a child becoming ill or receiving an injury whilst at school, parents are informed as soon as possible. It is therefore important that we have up to date records of when and where parents can be contacted.
The majority of members of the staff, both teaching and support, have First Aid training and certification and are well able to deal with minor cuts and bruises etc. First Aid boxes are kept in the hall and medical room.

The school has an effective Child Protection Policy and Mrs Tina March is the named teacher responsible for this area.
In the case of any form of child abuse being suspected, either from visual signs or disclosures made, it is the duty of the school to immediately inform the Social Services Department of the County Council.

    Restraint Policy
Our school is committed to ensuring that all staff and adults with responsibility for children’s safety and welfare will deal professionally with all incidents involving aggressive or reckless behaviour, and only use physical intervention as a last resort in line with DfEE and LEA advice. If used at all it will be in the context of a respectful, supportive relationship with the pupil. We will always aim to ensure minimal risk of injury to pupils and staff.
